Introducing our first IndieBiz EDU Summit. Before the busy season starts, join us for some self-care for your business. You’ll learn in community with fellow indie local businesses, gaining inspiration and knowhow to put to work right away. Enjoy a half day of learning and networking including breakfast, coffee, snacks, and swag. The event will be at USM's Portland campus in the brand new McGoldrick Center. 

Our summit is for local business owners, entrepreneurs, artists, and anyone who wants to learn new tools to grow and thrive in 2025. Content will be targeted at businesses of five employees and under. Psst…that means you too solopreneurs. That said, if the event resonates with you, join us. Keynote: Maximizing your business value, why it matters
Brian Hanson, President & Owner,  Maine Business Brokers

Brian D. Hanson is President and Owner of Maine Business Brokers, a sell-side brokerage firm operating in Maine and New Hampshire. In addition to working as a business broker for over 20 years, he has decades of entrepreneurial experience in a wide range of industries. He currently is the co-owner of several other businesses including restaurants and a manufacturing firm. Brian’s businesses have been featured in local print, TV and radio as well as Time Magazine and Good Morning America and is the author of "The Basics of Buying & Selling a Business". Brian has also been a volunteer SCORE mentor, workshop presenter and Subject Matter Expert and for over 12 years. Brian was born and raised in northern Maine.

Combined with his broad range of business experiences this gives him a unique understanding of Maine’s small business owners and buyers. Brian graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Maine’s School of Business and is a Licensed Designated Broker in the State of Maine.

Hannah Richards, Director of Brand Management, Ethos Marketing

Hannah is a creative lead and brand strategist at Ethos, with a specialization in social media marketing. She works with clients to develop concepts and content designed to reach and engage current and prospective audiences across a diverse digital landscape. She has worked with both local and national brands including Coombs Family Farms, Dead River Company, Maine’s Community Colleges, Oakhurst, Heatable, Gifford’s Ice Cream, Community Health Options, and more to create unique and memorable campaigns that are strategic, measurable and effective. With more than 15 years of experience in social media and brand strategy, Hannah is driven to keep pace with new trends and deliver to clients the most up-to-date recommendations that fit their brands. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa, summa cum laude from Clark University with a B.A. in International Development and Economics.

Breakout Session: Navigating the top legal concerns for small businesses and sole proprietors
Erik Peters, Partner & Elizabeth Johnston, Attorney, Verrill Law

Erik Peters is a partner in Verrill’s Labor and Employment Group. He regularly conducts workplace investigations, advises clients on employment law and human resources compliance issues and defends companies accused of discrimination or harassment based upon disability, religion, age, sexual orientation, whistleblower retaliation, and wage and hour violations. Erik also regularly conducts anti-harassment training for his management side clients and for other attorneys.

Elizabeth Johnston, is an attorney in Verrill’s Labor & Employment Group.  Working with clients from a diverse range of industries and sizes, Liz takes a tailored approach to helping businesses handle workforce matters, achieve legal compliance, and reach organizational goals.  Liz counsels clients on a broad range of employment matters, from wage and hour issues to harassment, discrimination, and whistleblower claims, and maintains an active investigations addressing a variety of workplace matters.

Julie O’Boyle, Social Media Strategist, Ethos Marketing

Julie O'Boyle is a Social Media Strategist at Ethos Marketing. With over 12 years of experience working in-house for both brands and agencies, Julie is a conceptual thinker and adept visual storyteller, skilled at shaping her voice and perspective to fit that of whom she's creating for. 

She is also a micro-influencer in her own right, having managed her own website and social media channels since 2009.

Joe Walsh, Owner, Green Clean Maine(Moderator)

Joe is VP of the Board of Directors at Portland Buy Local. He is the founder and owner of Green Clean Maine, an environmentally-friendly home cleaning service in Portland. Joe is passionate about the power of local, independent businesses to create economic opportunities in the community and a unique sense of place. During the pandemic, he successfully advocated locally and nationally for changes to aid programs so that they could better ensure the survival of small, local businesses.

He is an avid skier, and enjoys teaching children to ski during the winter months. He also enjoys hiking, live music, boating of all kinds and attempting to keep up with the imagination and art skills of his young son. Joe and his family live in the East Deering neighborhood of Portland.

       

Becky Mckinnell, Founder of IBec Creative &  Wildwood Oyster Co

Elizabeth April, Co-owner, Portland Yoga Project

Elizabeth April is co-owner and co-founder of The Portland Yoga Project with Jess Emilfarb. After many years of teaching and managing at other studios, she is realizing her dream of opening a studio of her own and building a community that values treating everyone—from teachers to people in the local community—with the utmost respect.

With guidance from several teachers over the years, including her heaviest influence from Annie Carpenter, Elizabeth offers yoga and barre classes and teacher trainings that are deeply rooted in alignment and functional movement. Her teaching aims to empower her students while keeping them safe and powerful in their own bodies. She believes that educating students leads to opportunities for every person to direct their own embodied experience. 

She completed her 200 hour Yoga Teacher Training in Santa Monica, CA through YogaWorks in 2008 and later finished her 500 hour training through Down Under Yoga School in Brookline, MA in 2015. She also holds a 100-hour Barre Teacher Training certification from Barre & Soul in Melrose, MA, in 2014.


Tom Ruff, Owner, Orange Bike Brewing Co

Tom Ruff is the founder and CEO of Orange Bike Brewing Company, Portland, Maine’s first dedicated gluten-free brewery. Tom’s vision for Orange Bike goes beyond award-winning, naturally gluten-free beer; it’s about creating a business that serves as a force for good.
