Portland Buy Local is a campaign of the Portland Independent Business & Community Alliance. Our mission is to support locally owned, independent businesses in Portland, to maintain our unique community character, provide continuing opportunities for entrepreneurs, build community economic strength, and prevent the displacement of community-based businesses by national and global chains.

We are affiliated with the national nonprofit American Independent Business Alliance.

Flyer on Rebate Checks Available
ImageThe arrival of the federal tax rebate checks offers a great oppportunity to remind people of how their spending choices impact our community and local economy.  We've created an 8.5 x 11 flyer and smaller handouts that suggest four ways people can use their rebate to  strengthen their own finances and bolster Maine's  economy.  Please print and distribute them widely.
Here's our press release.

The Phoenix Best of Portland Readers Poll
Apr. 17, 2008—In a tremendous show of support for what makes Portland a great and singular city, Phoenix readers  awarded almost  every category in this year's Best of Portland Readers Poll to independent businesses and local arts and community organizations.

ImagePortland Buy Local would like to thank Phoenix readers for once again voting the campaign Best Local Cause.  We are honored and grateful for the recognition.  Here's what The Phoenix wrote:

"By making it easier to identify locally owned businesses, Portland Buy Local helps us keep our hard-earned bucks in town, supporting the city’s economy and fending off the chains. If we’re going to part with our money, we might as well keep it lying around somewhere nearby."

New Posters
Image Apr. 16, 2008——Three new posters in our "Find Your Independents!"  series are being distributed this week.  The posters feature photographs of Portland business owners taken by local photographer Nathan Eldridge.  They are designed to call attention to the value of doing business with people who live in the community, and to advertise the IndieBiz Directory.

Click the following links to see each new poster:  Clay CIty Redux, Downeast Maytag, and Public Market House.  The four earlier versions were Back Bay BicycleFresh Approach, Micucci Grocery, and Rosemont Floral.
